Cotton Pickens 

Cotton had punched cows from Texas to Montana and was more than passin' fair with a six-gun. So when the town fathers of Doubtful, Wyoming offered him the sheriff's badge for $125 a month, Cotton figured if he stuck it out for a year he'd end up with a nice poke. But sheriffs didn't last long in Doubtful - the last one had quit, another was roped and drug, and another was backshot by the hired guns at the Circle L.

A range war was building in the valley. Homesteaders were stringing wire, and the three large spreads who'd been there first wanted free access to water like they'd always had - and they were hiring an army of hardcases to get what they wanted. There was going to be a lot of blood spilled, but one man stood in the way of it. Because Cotton figured law and order was coming to Doubtful no matter what, and as far as he was concerned the fate of any gunslick who saw it different was either a bullet or the hangman's noose!
